Coach Vince Anderson

Vince Anderson is entering his 32nd year of collegiate coaching this season. He is starting his 13th year at Texas A&M, where he has trained men and women hurdlers and women’s sprinters since 2005. Before coaching at Texas A&M, Anderson coached 16 balanced years at the University of Tennessee. Starting at Tennessee in the summer of 1988, Anderson first trained women’s sprints and hurdles for eight years, then followed with an eight year stint as the men’s sprints, hurdles and jumps coach, through the 2004 season.

Anderson began coaching as a completely inexperienced volunteer assistant on the staff of Tom Tellez at the University of Houston, from 1986 through 1988. During those three invaluable seasons at UH, Anderson was blessed to witness the training of several champions, through the 1988 Olympic Trials.

In addition to Coach Tellez’ tutelage, Anderson credits his ongoing development as a coach to a continuous string of amazing and generous mentors, who gracefully share their hard-won wisdom with patient teaching. As a coach, Anderson is most proud of his academic influence on the life of his students, which has led to an exceptional graduation and personal achievement rate among his charges. Athletically, Anderson has trained NCAA champions in every sprint, hurdle and relay event – a feat it took him 29 coaching years to accomplish. Anderson is grateful to have assisted nine NCAA Outdoor Championship teams – eight at Texas A&M and one at Tennessee. Anderson also assisted for one NCAA Indoor championship squad at Tennessee in 2002.

Vince was born in Houston, Texas, where he attended HISD schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade before graduating from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1979. Anderson started coaching in January of 1986 after practicing architecture for six years. Anderson credits his father, a track-loving baseball man, for the improbable introduction of track into Vince’s consciousness at age 12, where it has remained to this day. Anderson credits his mother, an artist, for instilling his sense for art and design. Anderson is proudly married to the former Charla Gilcrease, a math/science teacher and personal trainer, and they have a 22 year old son, Kohl, who attends Texas A&M to study engineering and run track.  (Bio borrowed from Texas A&M University)
